About Kapuluan

The Kapuluan Study Center formally opened as a cultural and activity Center for young men in college last June 9, 1984. A project of the University Center Foundation, which is a non-stock, non-profit private corporation, Kapuluan aims to develop and to form students into better individuals through the various educational and formative activities. Moreover, it tries to foster an atmosphere of friendship, clean fun and good living -- something the students find uniquely appealing in the center.
Situated at the heart of UP Village in Diliman, Kapuluan has been of service to university students mostly from UP and the Ateneo. Since it opened, it has been primordially concerned with providing ample yet thorough programs which effectively contribute to their human, scientific and cultural formation. These programs have been designed to supplement their academic education with positive and lasting contribution as well as practiced insights gleaned from the study, research and experience of many university authorities as well as leading professionals.
While all these activities teach and encourage seriousness and professionalism in work and study, weekends at the Center are usually spent with recreational activities such as sports and excursions. Semestral breaks are usually spent in out-of-town seminars and workshops, which develop social concern and proper civic habits among students.
The Center not only stresses on the human formation of the students but also on their spiritual formation. This aspect of formation has been entrusted to Opus Dei (The Work of God), which is a personal prelature of the Catholic Church.
The students benefit from the means of formation in the Center. There are no membership fees. It is open to anyone who would like to participate in its activities. It is in this manner that Kapuluan hopes to contribute lasting effects to society by giving proper Christian formation to the young men who will someday be the ones moving this nation of ours.
(This text was lifted from an article that originally appeared in the Kapuluan Review in March 1985 when Kapuluan was barely a year old, and was reprinted in 2004's issue of Rekap, the official magazine of the Center. More than twenty years later, Kapuluan remains firm in its commitment to form the youth.)
