The great study weekend
// Apr. 07 '09 | GeneralLaguna Hills Study Camp became the getaway of several K25 fellows and guys who frequent Kapuluan Study Center last March 20 to 22.
In an effort to prepare for the upcoming final exams and put intense focus on their academics, hours of mental effort were poured in the camp's study room as each fellow tried to absorb the contents of the study material at hand. External silence inside the halls of the house was observed during study periods. This became instrumental in making the fellows' studies fruitful.
The quality of the study weekend was further enhanced with the presence of Senior Vice-President of Zuellig Pharma, Mr. Lito Cruz, who had a get-together with the fellows after the March 21dinner. Mr. Cruz challenged the guys to have an attitude of always improving one's self, day by day, no matter how small the increment, portrayed by the Japanese concept "kaizen". While he encouraged the guys to be the best they can be whatever profession or company they choose to be in, Mr. Cruz also emphasized that a quality person is "other-oriented". An excellent leader is one who takes into consideration the needs of his men, his community, and his family.
During his talk, he gave concrete examples by drawing from personal experience of being a leader in large corporations. For instance, he made sure that all his employees, close to forcing them, used their vacation leave and spent adequate time with their families. In the long run, the productivity of the employees increased, as they did not experience burn-out. They were rather, ready to take on the next day's work due to the quality time spent with their loved ones.
Mr. Cruz also said innovative solutions should be value-driven, respect human dignity and family, and contribute to the community, society and environment in general.
The afternoons of the study weekend were also imbued with sports periods, supplementing the mental effort spent during the day with physical exercise. This short time of recreation made the the guys feel recharged and eager to go back to their studies.-- Michael Joseph Luistro
